Saudi Arabia is planning major transport and infrastructure upgrades in Makkah, including the development of a new airport and a modern metro system. Saleh Al-Rasheed, CEO of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and the Holy Sites, confirmed that approval has already been granted for the strategic and economic plans to develop Makkah Airport. One of the key highlights is the “Smart Makkah” initiative, which uses artificial intelligence to monitor and manage crowd movement in and around the Grand Mosque. Transport services in the city have also been upgraded significantly. The Makkah bus network now includes 403 buses operating across 12 routes, serving hundreds of stops and stations. Since its launch in 2022, the service has handled over 185 million passengers. Additionally, the newly introduced Makkah Taxi service features modern vehicles with tracking systems, digital payments, and eco-friendly options.
Infrastructure development is also progressing rapidly. Key ring roads have been expanded and connected to major routes leading to the Grand Mosque. Facilities such as escalators, maintenance buildings, and shaded walkways are being added to improve convenience and safety.
Projects in Arafat and Mina include upgraded tents, residential towers for pilgrims, and a new emergency hospital. Sustainability efforts are also underway, including tree planting, water management systems, and improved waste handling.
